The Blog


With the recent rise in rules and regulations due to a sudden boom in participation of equine sports, the number of regulatory cases brought concerning equestrians. Continuous public debate over the last two years dealing with situations of animal maltreatment by individual owners, riding schools failing to provide adequate staff as well as the rules governing the participation of sport such as the length of spurs, has resulted in significant changes to the sport. However, as the equine industry continues to grow exponentially, involving a multitude of individuals, companies, and countries the legal issues and concerns associated with equestrian is consequently greater than ever.


Since equine sports have now emerged as a distinct aspect of sports law with statutory and case precedent that can subsequently inform legal issues within this novel context, it is even more important for equestrians to understand how the change in rules and their implications affects them in the world of horses. This blog will offer a breakdown of cases and issues in the field of equine sports for the everyday equestrian interested in sport law through the analytical perspective of a studying lawyer. Within this blog the field of equine sports will mainly focus upon horse racing, show jumping, eventing, dressage and modern pentathlon.


This is a disclosure: I am not a practicing lawyer, nor do I intend to provide information with the same knowledge of a trainee or practicing lawyer. These articles are created with the knowledge of a studying lawyer who is fascinated by both sports and law.

The Author


My name is Eleanor Walker I am a current student at BPP university undertaking a Post Graduate Diploma in Law following graduating from university with a first-class bachelor’s degree in Criminology and Sociology. I am an aspiring lawyer with a particular interest in sports law. I have always had a passion for equine sports, as a former national show jumping champion and pentathlon competitor. Outside of sports I enjoy reading, writing and music, having participated in ABRSM’s exams until I was sixteen. The purpose of this blog is to explore two of my interests: equine sports and law and how they are addressed within the legal sector of sports law.
